Joe Edgar Griffith passed away on May 31, 2025, at the age of 88.
Joe was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on September 14, 1936, to Ed and Annie Jo Griffith. Joe attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, graduating in 1955. From there he moved to Dallas, Texas, to attend Southern Methodist University, where he completed his undergraduate education and earned a law degree with honors. While there he was a member of the Order of Woolsack and the Southwestern Law Journal.
Joe was drafted into the Army in 1961 and was commissioned as a Captain into the Judge Advocate Generals Corps (JAG) shortly after graduating from law school. In addition to serving in the JAG Corps, he also served as a paratrooper in the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Division and earned an Army Commendation Medal.
After his military service, he spent his career as a lawyer in Crockett, Texas, for over forty years. In addition to practicing law, Joe enjoyed painting, playing guitar, hunting, cooking and gardening. As a child, Joe and his family visited Mason, often to see his aunt and uncle, Marie and John Arch Carter and their son, Pat Carter. Upon retiring, with the children grown, Joe and his wife, Becky, decided to move to Mason. In Mason, they Joe Edgar Griffith rekindled old connections and made new ones. They shared many happy times with friends and loved their life at their ranch in Streeter. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Frances Peveto Griffith.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Griffith; his son, Joe E. (Jody) Griffith, Jr.; daughter, Laurie Griffith Knightly; and his grandchildren, Grayson Griffith, Harrison Griffith and Annie Knightly. The family will celebrate Joe’s life privately at a date to be determined.
