Rubin A. J. Kasper

Rubin A. J. Kasper

Rubin A. J. Kasper, 101, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025 in Abilene, Texas. Rubin and Edna, his wife of 74 years, moved to Abilene from Dublin in 2022, to live in assisted living. He and Edna had lived in Dublin from 1971 until that time. Rubin was manager of the Lee Campbell Hereford Ranch, and Edna Rubin truly enjoyed his work at the LCR because other than his family, it comprised three of the things he loved most - cattle, horses and being outside. He continued to ride well into his 80s. Rubin lived the life of the real cowboy, rare in this day and age.

Rubin spent his early years in Mason County, Texas. He was born on Dec 21, 1923, at the home of his parents at Mason Mountain. He attended elementary school at Peter’s Prairie and high school in Mason.

Rubin served in the US Navy in WWII on the USS Cygnus. He served in the South Pacific, primarily around New Zealand and nearby islands. He was assigned to a refrigerator vessel that carried food from the Islands to the troops.

After the War, he met Edna Barsch in Brady while cruising the courthouse square. They married in 1951. They have three daughters, Darlene, Rita, and Becky.

Rubin never met a stranger and was King of the BS’ers. His readiness to lend a helping hand was one of his most appreciated attributes. Rubin left smiles on the faces people he came in contact with. He was “PaPa” to his grandchildren and could never say “no” to whatever scheme or wish they might dream up. That could be anything from going to “Proctors,” going camping, being coaxed into wearing a Hannah Montana wig or attending numerous rodeos, baseball, football and softball games. Last but not least, joining forces to aggravate or to play tricks on Mimi. Rubin was always aggravating someone, whether it was Edna (“Ned”), a child or a grandchild. The only things off limits were his hat and poking him in the stomach.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Rubin was very grateful to and enjoyed endlessly aggravating the entire staff who assisted and helped take care of him and Edna both at Wisteria and Lyndale Assisted Living. The family wants all of those wonderful people to know how thankful they are for the care and love shown to him and Edna. They made a big difference in his world. Rubin was quick to volunteer for various causes. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, served as Cub Scout volunteer and served on the cemetery board and church boards.

He and Edna were MYF sponsors, as well as Sunday School teachers. Rubin and Edna both felt education and helping youth were very important.

Rubin is preceded in death by his parents, George and Meta Kasper. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Edna, his two sisters, Lorine Metz (104) and Doris Grote (99), a sister-in-law, Frieda Chew, his three daughters: Darlene Kasper(Jimmy), Rita Kasper (Hans), and Becky Pair(Randy). In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren: Birk Billingsley (Haley), Mindy Brandt (Chance), Brady Pair, and Bayley Pair (Jody). Two great-grandchildren are Hayden Buckley and Cash Brandt. Rubin was a beloved uncle to his nephews and nieces.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held graveside in Dublin at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Hendrick Home For Children, PO Box 5195, Abilene,
