Obituaries Donna Rae Crutchfield Nelson

Donna Rae Crutchfield Nelson, 73, of Mason, Texas, went to join the Lord on December 4, 2025. She was born in San Angelo, Texas, on September 8, 1952, to Marjorie Crutchfield and John Nathan Crutchfield.

A fun fact about Donna is that although her actual birthday was September 8th, her mother listed September 1 st on her school enrollment forms so she could begin school early. Because of this, Donna lovingly embraced celebrating her “birthday week” from September 1st through September 8th. Another fun detail is that most of the community knew her as “DonnaBear,” a nickname given to her by her niece. Donna was sweet, funny, and full of laughter—she loved to laugh and brought joy to those around her.

Donna moved to Mason, Texas, to raise her son, Adam Powers Nelson, when he was just two years old. A few years after settling in Mason, she met her partner of 30 years, Pat Eppler, whom she lost in January 2021. Donna worked at Mason County News for over 22 years as a graphic artist designing advertisements. During those years, she formed many lifelong friendships. Her kind heart and free spirit allowed her to connect with people from all walks of life.

One of Donna’s most remarkable qualities was her empathy. She understood that everyone faces different challenges and accepted people exactly as they were—without judgment, with kindness, and with genuine love. Donna was a beautiful example of how people should treat one another.

Donna will be immensely missed by her family: her son Adam Nelson, his wife Elizabeth, and their children Wyatt and Frankie; her sister Carma Halfmann and Jack Davis of Fredonia, Texas; her niece Chas Schmidt; and her great-nieces Madelyn and Raegan Glentz.

Donna and her sister Carma were especially close, often referring to themselves as “Irish twins,” being born just 13 months apart. Carma was by Donna’s side throughout her life and played an essential role in helping her maintain her independence in her later years. She considered it a privilege to care for Donna in every aspect during her final month of life.

The family deeply appreciates all prayers, condolences, and expressions of support during this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at Mason Funeral Home on January 08, 2026. We will have visitation from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. and a short memorial starting at 5:00 p.m. for all who wish to attend.

Fly High, DonnaBear. Online condolences may be sent to the family online at masonfuneralhome.net Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason Funeral Home.
