Helen M. Ussery
Helen M. Ussery
Helen's journey began as the fourth child in her family, and she carried the responsibilities with grace and determination. Her academic prowess was evident early on, culminating in a remarkable achievement when she became the first person in Oklahoma to score a perfect 100% on the teacher's exam, earning her Bachelor's in Education from Panhandle A&M in Goodwill, Oklahoma, in 1965.
Her life was one of service and dedication. At the tender age of 16, she married the love of her life, Pete Melvin Ussery, and together they built a family, welcoming their daughter Helen in 1948 and son Joe in 1951. Helen's role as a mother was just the beginning of her nurturing journey; she was also an exemplary scout mom and later, a beloved teacher. For about eight years, starting in 1966, she taught junior high and fourth grade in Gruver, Texas, touching the lives of countless students with her wisdom and kindness.
Upon retiring to Llano, Helen continued to contribute to her community, substitute teaching and actively raising funds for the Llano Library through her work at the local thrift store. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of Lutie Watkins's Methodist Church in Llano.
Helen's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. An accomplished seamstress, she could create anything with needle and thread. Her hands were rarely still, as she crocheted beautiful pieces for everyone she loved. Her fascination with the natural world led her to collect rocks, which blossomed into a skill in lapidary. Moreover, Helen was an avid genealogist, tracing her family's roots and preserving their history for future generations.
Described by those who knew her as faith-filled, loving, and adventurous, Helen's legacy is one of love and commitment to her family. Surviving family is her daughter Helen and sonin- law Wayne McCollum, her son Joe and daughterin- law Hong Mei Ussery, her sisters Glenna Durr and Carol Sue Harper, her cherished grandchildren Pete, Lee, and Wayne Ussery, and her adored great-grandchildren Rachael, Ryan, Bella, Hayden, Nolan, and Carlyn Charleigh Ussery.
Helen M. Ussery's life was a testament to the power of education, the strength of family, and the joy of giving. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a guiding light in the lives of those she touched. Her spirit, teachings, and love will continue to live on through her family and the many lives she influenced.
