Captain Wayman David Curry

Captain Wayman David Curry (83), Flew his final flight West on July 28th, 2025. Wayman spent his last days peacefully on his ranch in Henly, TX under the care of his loving grandsons, son and sister.

Wayman was born on Friday the 13th, March 1942. At that time, the men in his extended family were deployed around the world fighting off tyranny in World War 2. Pride in the United States was deeply etched in his psyche and shaped the patriot he would become. Wayman was born to June Williams Curry (McCarty) and Wayman E Curry in Salt Lake City, UT. His biological father was lost during WW2 and June subsequently married Leonard C McCarty, his stepfather, and the family soon moved home to the family ranch in Henly, TX. The Texas Hill Country is where Wayman thrived and his love for all things Texas were unrivalled to none.

Wayman attended Johnson City High School, Southwest Texas State University (BS) and obtained his Master of Education degree at SWT. While attending college he was on the Rodeo Team and lived his best Texas life while steer dogging, saddle bronc riding and rodeo clowning. Two and half years later, married, with his college degree in hand, he had never been on an airplane. He entered the US Air Force as an officer and found his true passion in life, “aviation.”

Wayman was an instructor pilot in the Air Force for 5 years in the T38 at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio. After his stint in the Air Force, he was employed by Continental Airlines as a pilot where he remained for the remainder of his aviation career. His flight log credited him with 33,000 plus hours of flight time. He would have opted for more had his health allowed.

In addition to flying, Wayman was also a fulltime rancher, hack golfer, world traveler, scuba diver, fisherman and if it was thrilling, he most likely pursued it at one time. Wayman was very active in his church (Henly Baptist Church), he served as president of the Johnson City School Board, mentor to many future aviators, loving husband, avid storyteller, sincere friend to all he met. If you were to ask him later in life what his favorite activity and joy in life was, it was watching his Grandson’s play football on Friday nights.

Wayman married his high school sweetheart, Jocelyn Janet Didway and the two embarked upon adventures around the world until her passing in 2022. Wayman and Janet had one son, Troy Curry (Henly, TX) and two grandsons, Kyle Curry and Kade Curry. He is survived by his sister Lynda McCarty Turley (Henly, TX), niece Callie Turley Taylor and husband Jason Taylor (Austin, TX) and numerous cousins and relatives in Texas, California and Utah. He is proceeded in death by his biological father Wayman E Curry, mother June Williams McCarty, stepfather Leonard C McCarty and brother Johnny McCarty.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family ranch in Henly, TX on September 6th, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in kind to Henly Baptist Church.
