Mason Elementary and Junior High Schools each received the Healthy School Campus Recognition for the second consecutive year. To receive this commendation, the school campus must meet three criteria by participating in Texas A&M AgriLife Extension programs designed to support and encourage staff, students and parents to improve health for a lifetime.

This year both campuses participated in Walk Across Texas (WAT). Five hundred eight students and 16 staff completed the eight-week long walking challenge. Coaches Todd, Cano and Cummings engaged their students in walking over 9,000 miles in those eight weeks. In conjunction with Heart Healthy Awareness month (February), students learned the value of establishing a habit of regular physical activity.

From February through May, 50 Mason ISD third graders in Mrs. Edwards’s class committed to Learn, Grow, Eat, & Go. The students cleaned (in conjunction with Mrs. Finn’s eighth grade class) and maintained a garden area, planted and harvested vegetables. They learned healthier eating habits and sampled new fruits and vegetables.
