On the evening of May 28, 2025, Austin, Texas, endured a catastrophic hailstorm, marking one of the most severe weather events in the city's history. The storm unleashed baseball-sized hail, torrential rain, and wind gusts reaching up to 77 mph, leading to widespread destruction, significant power outages, and the tragic loss of one life.

Widespread Destruction and Power Outages

The storm's intensity resulted in extensive damage across Austin. Over 72,000 Austin Energy customers experienced power outages at the storm's peak, with more than 30,000 still without electricity the following morning. The utility reported over 100 downed utility poles and numerous fallen trees, some up to 50 feet tall, which disrupted power lines and blocked roads. Emergency services responded to a 35% increase in 911 calls, including nine confirmed water rescues.
