“Don’t mess with Texas public libraries,” the red, white and blue signs boldly stated at a recent demonstration at the Texas state capitol building. On Monday morning, a group of about two dozen people, including local library activists, gathered to voice their disagreement with H.B. 3225 and several other bills impacting libraries across the state.
“‘Don’t mess with Texas...’ is very iconic and Texan, and so we used that as our rallying cry and we printed posters and buttons that we designed,” said Llano resident Leila Green Little, who spoke with the News on Tuesday. She is one of seven plaintiffs in the ongoing federal lawsuit against Llano County over its removal of 17 controversial books from the public library system’s shelves and card catalog in 2021.
The protest was organized by Little and Texas FReadom Fighters co-founder Carolyn Foote, who is a retired librarian.
