Triple-Digit May Heat Puts Texas Grid and Policy in the Hot Seat

Triple-Digit May Heat Puts Texas Grid and Policy in the Hot Seat

It may be mid-May, but across the Hill Country and much of Texas, it feels more like the height of summer. Forecasts show temperatures soaring well above 100°F on Wednesday, May 14, as the region grapples with one of the earliest and most intense heatwaves on record.

State power grid operator ERCOT anticipates that electricity demand could top 84 gigawatts, breaking the previous May record and approaching the all-time summer high set last year. The surge in demand is being driven by early-season extreme heat, which meteorologists say reflects an ongoing trend toward hotter and longer summers in Texas.
