Student art, Science Showcase Held in Marble Falls
More than 70 students presented over 200 pieces of original art at the Kiwanis Art & Science Showcase held on Saturday May 3 at the Downtown Beer Hall in Marble Falls. Seven students presented Science Projects that exhibited significant research. Parents, family, friends, Kiwanians and shoppers enjoyed the colorful original display.

The Highland Lakes Kiwanis Club sponsored the Student Art and Science Showcase on Saturday, May 3, 2025 hosted by the Downtown Beer Hall that faces out to the Harmony Park in town center of Marble Falls.

Over 70 students submitted over 200 astonishing art pieces and seven students presented science projects exhibiting astounding research and expertise. Students, parents and family, Kiwanians and downtown shoppers expressed amazement at the visible talent of these students as they perused the exhibits.

At the regular Tuesday Kiwanis Club Lunch, President Kathy van Eeten declared, “The day was perfect.” She relayed that Kiwanis funded 37 cash awards to deserving students from its budget and other member donations. The participating students came from all four Boys & Girls Clubs, Kingsland Charter School, Highland Lakes Elementary, Marble Falls High School and Middle School, along with Faith Academy and some home schoolers as well.

The K-6 SUPERIOR Award recipients: Celeste Long, Dennis Gonzalez, Addilynn Luxton, Raquel Vargas, Iriana Lugo, Noah Burton and Turner Johnson. The K-6 EXCELLENT Award recipients: Arius Trevion, Angel Whitt, Tytan Donaho, April Cruz, Manuell Ruiz, Carlos Vargas, Davian Ruiz, Cameron V. and Anthony W., Autumn Blackford, Delores Smith, Jay’mir Clark, Zeke Barna, Lentzi Caropepel and Julisa Chavez. The K-6 People’s Choice Award recipient: Manuell Ruiz.

The 7-12 SUPERIOR Award recipients: Brynn Rutter, Thekla Grubbs, Ashley Gonzalez, and Idaly Olvera. The 7-12 EXCELLENT Award recipients: Rebekah Cota, Florenci Cristel Mogud, Emerson Price, Caroline Hewitt, Sarah Kaormish, Mariel Steel, Elizabeth Neely and Addi Schaefer. The 7-12 People’s Choice Award recipient: Brynn Rutter.

The Science Project Award Recipients: First-Micah Rivers, Second-Connor Mc-Donald, Third-Ryan Nolan and Iris Wetherwax. The People’s Choice Award recipient: Noah Irwin.

President van Eeten commended club members Tom Stansbury, Drew Claus, Dan Nelson, and Jim Hower who comprised the scholarship selection committee. They evaluated scholarship applications and selected four graduating seniors to receive $4,000 scholarships. A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a career high school graduate. The recipients will be announced on Friday night at the high school awards ceremony.

HLs Kiwanis provides these scholarships and art and science awards through fees collected from individuals and businesses that purchase flag subscriptions.

Kiwanis volunteers pro- vide and post over 200 flags throughout the community in honor of each national holiday. Kiwanis also raises funds by collecting vendor fees for the quarterly Main Street Market and the October Classic Car Show on Main Street. The club also assists with parking cars in desirable reserved locations at the boat races every year, accepting donations for the service. Kiwanis partners with the Boys & Girls Clubs and helps to fund classroom grants through the Marble Falls Education Foundation.

Dues to join Kiwanis are nominal and include the weekly luncheons. Guests are invited to join the Kiwanis fellowship at River City Grille any Tuesday at noon.

Micah Rivers (left foreground) won first place for his science project entitled the Original Radio Transmitter. Connor McDonald (on the right) was awarded second place for his "raw science" cardboard airplane that failed to fly but taught him valuable aeronautical lessons. Noah Irwin received the People's Choice Award for his science project that demonstrated the human cardiovascular system.
