On Saturday, Blanco Performing Arts was fortunate enough to host Miu Ishikawa for her U.S. recital debut concert. Ishikawa is the recipient of the Betty Dickinson Award for the Texas State International Piano Festival and was pleased to be performing for Blanco.
Dr. Jason Kwak, co-founder of the Texas State International Piano Festival (TSIPF), explained that the recitals offer the musicians both growth and experience. TSIPF is a week-long camp with international attendance giving these artists to meet with both world-renowned instructors and to exchange ideas and techniques with other artists.
The concert began at 7:30 p.m. with Claude Debussy – Images, Book I. The first movement was entitled Reflets dans L’eau (Reflections in the Water). It brought forth images of sparkling water with the delicate tinkling of the piano and then expanding circles of water radiating from some unseen pebble thrown in breaking the surface. The bass line was fluid with occasional dark undertones. The piece had you treading water with a little apprehension about what was unseen in the waters.
