The Mason High School tennis team successfully defended its Class 3A team tennis state championship March 6-7 in Waco.
Mason beat Vernon 5-4 in dramatic fashion. With the two teams tied at 4-4 with one match remaining, each programs’ players, coaches and fans watched as the boys No. 2 singles played out featuring Puncher Cade Dudney, who prevailed 6-3, 6-4 to ensure the state title remained in Mason. He was named the Boys Most Valuable Player.
“That’s what you want,” Mason head coach Cade Smith said. “That’s what you want the state title to come down to where it's one match and everybody's surrounding the courts and they just battled it out and Dudney prevailed. And that was fun, that was one of the most fun, probably one of the most enjoyable and intense matches that we've ever played. It was fun.”
