A mass shooting on a popular stretch of the West Sixth Street entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, left multiple people dead and dozens more wounded, prompting a full-scale investigation by local, state and federal authorities.

According to the Associated Press, the Department of Homeland Security later identified the gunman as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Senegal who lived in Pflugerville, a suburb north of Austin.

Police say the incident occurred just before 2:00 a.m. near Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, a popular bar and gathering spot for locals and University of Texas students.
