Judge Ron Cunningham announced during Tuesday’s county commissioner court meeting that he will step down in March following the primary election, having accepted a new position with the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) as a county resource officer. The role, effective March 16, will cover Central and West Texas counties, stretching from Bastrop to El Paso.

Cunningham noted that while his term technically does not end until December 31, whoever wins the Republican primary on March 3 will be sworn in after the election is canvassed. Since there is no Democratic candidate for the county judge position, the primary winner can go ahead and take office.

"I'm excited, TAC is a great organization," Cunningham said. Recognizing the support of his wife, he added, "I would be remiss if I didn't recognize someone in this room who has been there step for step, day by day, and that's Carol. Thank you."
