Aidan McCarthy, a Blanco High School junior, placed third in the Universal Tennis Rating Winter National Championship Friday, Jan. 2 at Anderson High School in Austin.
The 24 tournament qualifiers were divided into groups of eight. McCarthy was placed in the top group, the “championship group.” He lost in the quarterfinals to a college junior from the state of Texas, 6-4, 6-2. In the consolation bracket, he won 6-0, 6-0 to an opponent from Texas. In the consolation finals, McCarthy beat a player from Venezuela, 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker).
The champion, from Leander, went 3-0. The second place participant was from Austria. McCarthy went 2-1 in the tournament. The rest of the players had one win or no wins.
