Thurman could not say no to service in HSB

Thurman could not say no to service in HSB
Like so many who move to HSB, Mayor Elsie Thurman and husband Andy Thurman intended to play golf and tennis, enjoy travel, visit children and grandchildren, and just be retired. But also, like so many, they discovered their new home mattered deeply and they could not say no to the multiple calls to serve in the community.

For someone who never expected to run for public office, Horseshoe Bay’s fourth mayor Elsie Thurman seemed to inhabit the role with effective and efficient confidence.

As her successor, Mayor Jeff Jones described Thurman, “She is deliberate, but decisive. Patient, but persistent. Fair, but she is firm.” It is a good description, but not what she expected to be doing when she and her husband, Andy, moved to HSB.

“When we moved to Horseshoe Bay, I boldly announced to friends that I was done with committees and minutes. I wanted to golf, play tennis, travel and just be retired,” Thurman recalled. She had served on innumerable non-profit boards in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
