The Llano Police Department is warning residents of a sophisticated new scam after two recent incidents in which imposters posed as city officials and police officers in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.

On Oct. 27, police were alerted to a convincing email sent to a local resident, appearing to be from the City of Llano Planning and Zoning Commission. The message used the City Hall address and logo, referenced an actual rezoning application filed for the property that is on public record, and included an attached invoice. The fraudulent correspondence claimed the resident owed fees and instructed them to reply for wire transfer information and submit proof of payment.

The email claimed to be from city employee Tony Guidroz and used a deceptive sender address, planning-co-llano-tx@usa-com. Police said the scammer attempted to route victims into transferring money through email-only communication.
