Paul and Michele Smith

The Smith home, the house with magnificent views of our beautiful Texas Hill Country, is a wonderful addition to the Mason County Republican Women’s 2025 Home Tour. The architect, James Orr from Scotland took full advantage of the hilltop location when he used expansive, panoramic windows to create a continual Texascape from one room to the next. It is a spacious, well-planned home with ample indoor and outdoor living areas.

The home has undergone a complete restoration consisting of a remodeled kitchen, pantry and laundry room, three bedrooms, three and a half baths, an office, den, as well as the entire original electrical and plumbing replaced. There are tennis courts and three paddocks: one for their two miniature donkeys Chewy and Pedro, another for the goats, all on four acres.

The Hooten brothers, Robert and Terry, built the entire house in 1975 for George and Kay Brannies, and even laid the stones of the massive interior walls. One stone wall has two fireplaces, one side facing the living room, the other the master bedroom. It is said that the two brothers would work late into the night by lantern to meet the construction deadline. Michele and Paul bought the house in 2024. They are the fourth owners and moved in last November after an extensive remodel by Latigo Custom Restoration of Fredericksburg.
