In her presentation to the Court, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) President Christi McAllister said that the United States Constitution is the longest standing constitution in the world, now 238 years old. McAllister thanked Judge Sheree Hardin for recognizing Constitution Week in Mason County, and for “vigilantly protecting the freedoms offered to us” by that document.
Commissioners also approved September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month at the request of Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Center (MHDD), represented by Clinical Director Robin Conner. The MHDD serves six counties in the Hill Country, in- cluding Mason. Suicide prevention is an “urgent priority,” Connor said, as 4,376 Texans died by suicide in 2023 alone, and that there has been a 76% increase in suicide in Texas since 1999. Suicide is the leading cause of death for 15-34 year olds, and the 11th ranking cause of death for everyone in Texas, Conner said.
