Ricky Martin just belongs in a classroom full of kids, much like a songbird fits in a tree.

“Teaching has been an incredible experience for me,” said Martin. “When I walk in the room, it doesn’t matter which grade, the kids all run up to me and hug me. They probably don’t realize they’re coming to my rescue.”

The 69-year-old spoke with the News this week and humbly reflected on life, family and the myriad ways that being a teacher—even part-time—at the Blanco Independent School District has set him on a path toward healing after the loss of his 34-year-old son to cancer.
