A jackknifed tractor trailer blocked traffic for several hours on U.S. Hwy. 281 on the morning of Sept. 9, and the driver was airlifted as a result of the accident.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the 7500 block of U.S. Hwy. 281 south of Arrowhead Road. The driver of the tractor trailer was injured and was airlifted to a hospital in the Austin area.

“The truck was an 18-wheeler and was traveling in the southbound lane. The rig jackknifed down the embankment and wedged in a stand of trees, resulting in a steep 10-15 feet drop from the road pavement,” said Russell Stumpf of Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. “When the trailer jackknifed, the whole unit stayed together, except that the cab was left facing into the field to the west and the trailer was still facing south and parallel to the road.”
