For a few minutes this past Saturday, fall was in the air. But as the sun rose, summer returned and with it, the hottest team in the Bayside Market 4-Man Scramble turned out to be a three-man team of Tom Spelman, Coady Creel and Richard Garner. After their fourth player had to withdraw, the three turned in a blistering 20-under par net score to win the next to last event of the 2025 MGA season.
The beautiful day started with breakfast from the event sponsor, Tim Brown and Bayside Grocery. Frequent shopper and MGA president David Wolfe reminded the players about the store’s daily lunch specials, and we learned that in the industry jargon, Bayside is actually known as a ‘grocerant’ or quality grocery store which also offers restaurant quality food service and deli meals. Bayside also sponsors the closest to the hole contests at each event during the year, and the MGA will begin calling those winners, ‘Gimmeerants’.
The team of Frank Hosea, David Wolfe, Gary Thomas and Steve Wilkins finished second at 18-under par net. In the contest to hit the ball closets to the hole on par 3’s, a number of players brought their best games as Steve Wilkins was just 2’5” away on hole 3, Tony Valadez was impressive with a shot just 2’6” away on hole 8. Brent Mann thought he had a hole in one on hole 12 with his ball finishing just 2’7” away. And Ron Doherty used his trademark extra high tee shot to hit his ball just 3 feet away on hole 17.
