Friends of Fredericksburg Nature Center has announced its sponsorship of two “Fall Star Parties at the Park,” inviting the community to experience the wonders of the night sky under the guidance of astronomer Eddie Hrncir. The events, brought to you by Star Party America, will take place at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, a location known for its dark skies and open horizons—ideal conditions for astronomy. The events are set for Saturday, September 27 and Saturday, October 25, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and are open to the public at no charge (donations to FFNC are appreciated). The parties will take place in the large open field immediately across from the park office. All you need to bring with you is your curiosity, a willingness to learn, and perhaps a blanket or lawn chair for comfort. Attendees are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to secure a good parking spot, as the event will begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to help facilitate parking. While the Friends of Fredericksburg Nature Center and Star Party America will provide the telescope and guidance, participants are welcome to bring binoculars to enhance the experience.
What to Expect:
When attendees arrive at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, they will be welcomed by Friends of Fredericksburg Nature Center volunteers followed by an interactive sky tour led by astronomer Eddie Hrncir. Using a giant Meade LX 200 telescope, renowned for its precision and powerful optics, along with a vivid green laser pointer, Hrncir will unlock the secrets of the night sky for all those present. One of the highlights of the evening will be Hrncir’s demonstration of how to locate the historic landing site of Apollo 11, the legendary NASA mission that carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon in 1969.
