On​ August 5, Texas DPS troopers arrested 37-year-old Kody Lane Talley of Leander in connection with​ the July 25 crash on U.S. 281 near Park Road 4 that killed 5 women. He was booked into the Burnet County Jail on five counts of second-degree felony manslaughter and is being held on a $1 million bond.​ As the investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (Texas DPS) continues, details are emerging about Talley's negligent behavior on the day of the crash and his history of intoxicated driving.

Deadly Collision on U.S. 281

​​What began as a girl's trip to celebrate a birthday ended in tragedy for five young friends from the Dallas area. Texas DPS troopers responded around 6 p.m. on Friday, July 25 to reports of a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 281 in Burnet County. According to a preliminary investigation and an arrest affidavit later obtained by multiple news outlets, a white 2018 Dodge Ram 4500—towing a horse trailer loaded with livestock—was traveling north when it veered across the center stripe into the southbound lanes just before the Park Road 4 intersection.
