Dianne Wassenich spoke about water protections July 22 at the quarterly meeting of the Blanco County Conservation Initiative at Gem of the Hills.
Wassenich is the former executive director and co-founder of the San Marcos River Foundation. She has served on various committees, including the San Marcos Watershed Initiative and Texas Parks and Wildlife River Advisory Board. In 2019, she received the Terry Hersey Women in Conservation Award.
Wassenich’s presentation was a lively and instructive primer on grassroots organizing for water protections. Her journey as a “Texas Water Hero” began as part of a planning group organizing for the celebration of the Texas Sesquicentennial. This group had the idea of an organization which would speak for the river because of its unique and important role in San Marcos. As the foundation developed and evolved, they found outreach opportunities to expand community involvement including: a river awareness month in partnership with professors and botanists, art contests and more.
