In a rare and emotional public hearing held today at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, state lawmakers from both the Texas House and Senate came face-to-face with grieving residents, emergency officials, and experts to examine what went wrong during the catastrophic flash floods that ravaged Kerr County and the surrounding Hill Country region on July 4. This field hearing marks the first in-person legislative investigation into the disaster, which is now the deadliest flood event in Texas since the 1921 Central Texas flood.
By 10:00 am, around 200 people were in attendance for the hearing including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who was the acting governor when the floods occurred. He said the day will haunt him for the rest of his life. “Like you, we all feel this pain, "he said. "We will not quit until we find those last three souls, until you feel like we have done everything we can do that you asked us to do,” Patrick added.
