Sheriff Don Grote Retires After 52 Years Serving Mason County

Mr. Don Grote started his Law Enforcement career on May 1st, 1973, serving as Mason County Deputy Sheriff with Sheriff Don S. Keller. Sheriff Keller later resigned in December of 1973, due to health concerns. Mr. Grote continued his service to Mason County with the newly appointed Sheriff John R. ‘Red’Alexander.

In 1976, Mr. Grote was elected to the position of Mason County Sheriff and Tax Assessor- Collector, a position held for a total of five consecutive terms- through the end of 1996. Thereafter Mr. Grote continued his law enforcement service with the Regional Organized Crime Information Center – ROCIC- serving as Law Enforcement Coordinator within the State of Texas.

ROCIC is one of six Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Intelligence Centers covering the entire United States plus the Caribbean area. The RISS Intelligence Centers are BJA- US Dept of Justice entities. As such, the Mission Statement for the RISS Centers include restrictions for felony level criminal cases only. “A quite interesting job description,” Mr. Grote lamented.
